Guide to Transplanting Trees and Shrubs
- Call 811 to locate any utility lines before digging
- Water plant in container thoroughly before planting, it is best to transplant on a cloudy day where less moisture will be lost
- Dig a hole as deep as the root ball, and two to three times as wide
- If the soil is poor, add organic matter such as peat or compost to improve quality
- Remove plant/tree from container and gently massage ant tight roots so they can grow outward into the soil
- Backfill with enough soil so that when it is planted it sits at the same depth as it was in the pot. More than an inch of soil over the roots can slowly kill a tree
- Place tree/shrub in the middle of hole and tamp soil down along sides.
- Add water before completely filling hole, fill with remaining soil and water again to eliminate air pockets
- Stake off tree if necessary to prevent damage to roots duting strong winds.
- Add 2-3 inches of mulch to hold moisture, keeping mulch away from trunk or stem
